Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Total: 45 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the topping:
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, softened butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.

  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  7. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder until well combined.

  8. Divide the risen dough into 4 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round ball.

  9. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  10. Using a sharp knife, score the top of each dough ball in a criss-cross pattern, creating the traditional “concha” design.

  11. Spoon a generous amount of the topping onto each dough ball, spreading it evenly over the top.

  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the conchas are golden brown and cooked through.

  13. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
