Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Icing, sprinkles, or edible decorations for decorating

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing well.

  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together.

  4. Divide the dough in half and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  6. Roll out one portion of the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out bunting flag shapes using a cookie cutter. Repeat with the remaining dough.

  7. Place the gingerbread bunting flags onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden around the edges.

  8. Allow the gingerbread bunting to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating with icing, sprinkles, or edible decorations.

  9. Once decorated, hang the gingerbread bunting on a string or ribbon for a festive display.
