How To Make Marmite Carbonnade

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into chunks
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 4 tbsp Marmite
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, toss the beef chunks with flour, salt, and pepper until coated.

  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Brown the beef in batches, then remove from the pot and set aside.

  3. In the same pot, add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.

  4. Return the beef to the pot and add the beef broth, Marmite, brown sugar, and bay leaves. Bring to a simmer.

  5. Cover and cook over low heat for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.

  6. Remove the bay leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
