Ingredients

  • 2 ham shanks
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 cups of water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add the ham shanks, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaf, and water.

  2. Bring the pot to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cover and let it cook for 2 hours or until the meat is tender.

  3. Remove the ham shanks from the pot and shred the meat. Set aside.

  4. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the broth, discarding the vegetables and bay leaf.

  5. Return the strained broth to the pot and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Add the shredded ham back into the broth and heat through.

  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
