  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles


  1. Preheat grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat.

  2. In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

  3. Divide the beef mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a thin patty.

  4. Place a slice of American cheese in the center of 4 patties.

  5. Top each cheese-topped patty with a plain patty. Press the edges together to seal, making sure the cheese is completely enclosed.

  6. Grill the burgers for about 8 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.

  7. Toast the hamburger buns on the grill for a minute or two until lightly browned.

  8. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on the bottom half of each bun. Add your desired toppings and cover with the top half of the bun.
