How To Make Indian Sweet Potato & Dhal Pies

Who says vegetarians don’t get to enjoy savory meals? A taste of these authentic vegetarian recipes will make you change your mind. So, you just might want to go vegetarian after your first bite.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 packet ready-made pie crust

Instructions

  1. Boil the sweet potatoes until tender. Drain and mash them.

  2. Rinse the lentils and cook them in a saucepan with 2 cups of water until soft. Drain and set aside.

  3. Heat oil in a skillet. Add onions and garlic, sauté until golden.

  4. Add cumin, turmeric, garam masala, and salt. Cook for another 2 minutes.

  5. Add mashed sweet potatoes and cooked lentils to the skillet. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.

  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

  7. Roll out the pie crust and cut circles to fit your pie molds.

  8. Fill each pie crust with the sweet potato and lentil mixture.

  9. Cover with another pie crust and seal the edges with a fork.

  10. Place the pies on a baking tray and bake for 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

  11. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
