How To Make Pitta Bread

This is a recipe for homemade pitta bread, a soft and fluffy Middle Eastern bread that is perfect for sandwiches or dipping.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 10 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.

  2. Gradually add the olive oil and warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing well to form a soft dough.

  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a round circle, about 1/4 inch thick.

  7. Carefully transfer the rolled dough onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 5-6 minutes, or until puffed and lightly golden.

  8. Remove from the oven and let the pitta bread cool on a wire rack before serving.
