How To Make Pitta Bread
This is a recipe for homemade pitta bread, a soft and fluffy Middle Eastern bread that is perfect for sandwiches or dipping.
Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 3/4 cup warm water
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
-
Gradually add the olive oil and warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing well to form a soft dough.
-
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.
-
Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a round circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
-
Carefully transfer the rolled dough onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 5-6 minutes, or until puffed and lightly golden.
-
Remove from the oven and let the pitta bread cool on a wire rack before serving.
