  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

  3. Add the sugar and salt to the melted butter, stirring constantly until the sugar has dissolved.

  4. Continue to cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until it reaches 300°F (150°C) on a candy thermometer (hard crack stage).

  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Carefully pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it out evenly.

  7. If desired, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top of the toffee while it is still warm.

  8. Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until it hardens.

  9. Once cooled and hardened, break the toffee into pieces and serve.
