Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 40 minutes
Total: 1 hour 10 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 8 oreo cookies
  • 8 candy eyes
  • 4 chocolate wafer cookies

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round cake pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Mix until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.

  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.

  6. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat and stir in semisweet chocolate chips until melted and smooth. Let it cool for 10 minutes.

  7. Cut cooled cake into owl shapes using a template or a knife. Place the owl shapes on a cooling rack.

  8. Pour the chocolate ganache over the owl shapes, allowing it to drip down the sides. Use a spatula to smooth the ganache.

  9. Place an oreo cookie in the center of each owl shape for the eyes. Add candy eyes on top of the oreo cookies. Break the chocolate wafer cookies into pieces and attach them to the sides of each owl shape as wings.

  10. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to set the ganache. Serve and enjoy!
