Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In another small bowl, mix the cocoa powder and hot water until smooth. Set aside to cool.

  4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  5. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Gradually add the flour mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Mix the cocoa mixture into the remaining batter until well combined.

  8. Drop spoonfuls of the chocolate batter on top of the vanilla batter in the pan. Use a knife to gently swirl the two batters together to create a marbled effect.

  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
