Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (for glaze)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, oil, eggs, salt, and yeast mixture. Stir well.

  3. Gradually add flour to the mixture and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal parts. Shape each part into a long rope and braid them together to form a loaf. Place the loaf onto a greased baking sheet.

  7. If desired, sprinkle raisins over the loaf. Brush the top of the loaf with beaten egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  9. Allow the sweet challah to cool before serving.
