Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 30 minutes
Total: 3 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and salt. Mix well.

  3. Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir until well combined.

  4. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring well after each addition.

  5. Once the dough comes together, transfer it onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1.5-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope and braid them together.

  8. Transfer the braided dough onto a greased baking sheet. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise for another 1.5 hours.

  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Brush the challah with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds, if desired.

  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  11. Allow the challah to cool slightly before serving.
