Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 35 minutes
Total: 3 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/4 cup honey, for filling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast until well combined.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm water, vegetable oil, honey, and egg until combined.

  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough by hand for 10 minutes or in a stand mixer for 5 minutes.

  4. Place the dough in a large oiled bowl and cover with a damp towel. Let rise for 1 hour.

  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  6. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangular shape. Spread the chopped apples evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Drizzle the honey over the apples.

  7. Starting at the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.

  8. Place the dough log seam side down on a greased baking sheet.

  9. Brush the top of the dough with egg wash and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

  10. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the challah is golden brown.
