  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a cast-iron skillet or baking dish.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, and egg.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

  5. Pour the batter into the prepared skillet or baking dish and smooth the top.

  6. Bake for 20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. Allow the corn pone bread to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
