Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 package (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup coarse salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.

  2. Gradually add warm water, stirring until dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  6. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.

  7. Divide dough into 4 equal portions and shape each into a round loaf.

  8. Carefully drop each loaf into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  9. Brush each loaf with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.

  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

  11. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter.

  12. Let cool slightly before serving.
