How To Make Sauerbraten Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 – 2 lbs beef roast
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp whole grain mustard
  • 2 tbsp pickling spice
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large resealable bag, combine vinegar, beef broth, onion, brown sugar, mustard, pickling spice, bay leaves, salt, and pepper.

  2. Add the beef roast and marinate in the fridge for 24-48 hours, turning occasionally.

  3. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  4. Remove the beef from the marinade and pat dry.

  5. Heat vegetable oil in an oven-safe Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

  6. Brown the beef on all sides.

  7. Add the marinade to the Dutch oven and bring to a boil.

  8. Cover the Dutch oven and bake in the preheated oven for 2-2 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.

  9. Remove from oven and let rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
