How To Make Shoyu Chicken

Despite its name, this shoyu chicken recipe is actually a Hawaiian dish. Shoyu is Japanese for soy sauce and this sweet-savory meal has a lot of it.

Total: 1 hour 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1cupsoy sauce
  • 1cupbrown sugar
  • 1cupwater
  • 4clovegarlic,minced
  • 1onion,chopped
  • 1tbspfresh ginger root,grated
  • 1tbspground black pepper
  • 1tbspdried oregano
  • 1tspred pepper flakes,crushed (optional)
  • 1tspground cayenne pepper,(optional)
  • 1tspground paprika,(optional)
  • 5lbchicken thighs,skinless

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, water, garlic, onion, ginger, black pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and paprika in a large glass or ceramic bowl. Add the chicken thighs, and toss to evenly coat.

  2. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and marinate the chicken in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

  3. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil the grate.

  4. Remove the chicken thighs from the marinade. Discard the remaining marinade. Grill the chicken thighs on the preheated grill until cooked through. This will be about 15 minutes per side.
