How To Make Tarka Dhal

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils thoroughly and drain.

  2. In a large saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds and cook until they start to splutter.

  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they turn golden brown.

  4. Stir in the turmeric powder, chili powder, and garam masala, and cook for a minute until the spices become fragrant.

  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.

  6. Add the rinsed lentils and water to the saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes or until the lentils are cooked through and tender.

  7. Season with salt to taste.

  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

  9. Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
