How To Make Khatti Dhal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow pigeon peas (toor dal)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Rinse the yellow pigeon peas and soak them in water for 30 minutes.

  2. In a pressure cooker, add soaked pigeon peas, water, chopped tomato, chopped onion, slit green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, and turmeric powder.

  3. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the lentils are cooked and soft.

  4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.

  5. Add the cooked lentil mixture to the pan and bring it to a boil.

  6. Add salt to taste and simmer for 5 minutes.

  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

  8. Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
