A healthier take on the classic German dessert with layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp of baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of low-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup of canned cherries, drained
  • 1 cup of whipped cream
  • Dark chocolate shavings for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch round cake pan with cooking spray.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, mix together Greek yogurt, applesauce, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. Gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients, alternating with milk, until fully combined.

  5. Pour batter into greased cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. Let cake cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan and placing on a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. Slice cake into two layers. Place canned cherries on one layer and spread whipped cream on top. Place second cake layer on top and repeat with cherries and whipped cream.

  8. Top with dark chocolate shavings and serve.
