How To Make Homemade Bagels

A delicious recipe for homemade bagels that are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 2 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • toppings of your choice (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and yeast. Stir in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes until yeast is foamy.

  2. Add salt to the dough and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  3. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape them into balls.

  4. Using your thumb, poke a hole in the center of each ball and stretch it to create a bagel shape.

  5. Place the bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let them rise for 1 hour.

  6. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).

  7. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water, 2 at a time, and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place back on the baking sheet.

  8. Brush the beaten egg over the tops of the bagels and sprinkle with your choice of toppings.

  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.

  10. Allow bagels to cool on a wire rack before serving.
