How To Make Homemade Bagels
A delicious recipe for homemade bagels that are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- toppings of your choice (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)
Instructions
-
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and yeast. Stir in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes until yeast is foamy.
-
Add salt to the dough and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape them into balls.
-
Using your thumb, poke a hole in the center of each ball and stretch it to create a bagel shape.
-
Place the bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let them rise for 1 hour.
-
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
-
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water, 2 at a time, and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place back on the baking sheet.
-
Brush the beaten egg over the tops of the bagels and sprinkle with your choice of toppings.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.
-
Allow bagels to cool on a wire rack before serving.
