How To Make Mardi Gras King Cake
A festive cake with a hidden baby inside, traditionally eaten during Mardi Gras season.
Serves:
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 1 baby trinket (optional)
- Purple, green, and gold sprinkles
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1-2 tbsp milk
Instructions
-
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, warm milk, melted butter, egg, and salt; mix well.
-
Stir in flour, a little at a time, until dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes.
-
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
-
Preheat oven to 375°F.
-
In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans.
-
Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread sugar mixture on top, leaving a border around edges.
-
If using a trinket, hide inside the dough at this point. Roll up dough tightly and form into a circle.
-
Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool.
-
In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and milk until it forms a glaze. Drizzle over cooled cake and sprinkle with purple, green, and gold sprinkles.
