How To Make Mardi Gras King Cake

A festive cake with a hidden baby inside, traditionally eaten during Mardi Gras season.

Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes
Total: 55 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 baby trinket (optional)
  • Purple, green, and gold sprinkles
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, warm milk, melted butter, egg, and salt; mix well.

  2. Stir in flour, a little at a time, until dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes.

  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

  4. Preheat oven to 375°F.

  5. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans.

  6. Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread sugar mixture on top, leaving a border around edges.

  7. If using a trinket, hide inside the dough at this point. Roll up dough tightly and form into a circle.

  8. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool.

  9. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and milk until it forms a glaze. Drizzle over cooled cake and sprinkle with purple, green, and gold sprinkles.
