No Fat Old Fashioned Apple Cake Recipe

Sure, 100 years ago it was ok to bake with lard, but in our modern times we’ve wisened up to the scary truth of fat. This apple cake recipe has the same spicy taste as that 100-year old recipe… but without the fat.


This old-fashioned apple cake recipe packs just as much flavor but without the fat.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • tsp mace
  • 1 egg
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 ½ cup tart apples, diced
  • ½ cup raisins
  • brown sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, and spices.

  3. In a mixer bowl put egg, egg whites, vanilla, apple sauce, and milk.

  4. Mix with electric mixer.

  5. Gradually add dry ingredients, blending well.
  6. Stir in apples and raisins by hand.
  7. Pour batter into 8x8 pan that has been sprayed with Pam.
  8. Sprinkle with brown sugar.
  9. Bake in oven for about 50 minutes.

  10. Let cool before serving. You may top with whipped cream or frosting of choice.
