Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until well combined.

  5. Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. Fold in the chopped walnuts, shredded coconut, and chocolate chips.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

  8. In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar together until stiff peaks form.

  9. Once the cake has cooled, slice it in half horizontally. Spread a layer of whipped cream on the bottom half of the cake.

  10. Place the top half of the cake on the whipped cream layer. Spread another layer of whipped cream on top.

  11. Serve the chocolate Italian cream cake and enjoy!
