Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion, minced garlic, grated carrot, and diced celery. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. Add ground beef and ground pork to the pot, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.

  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef or chicken broth, red wine, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  4. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer for at least 1.5-2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  5. Serve the meat sauce over your favorite pasta or use it as a filling for lasagna or stuffed shells.
