Instructions

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  2. Add sugar, water, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture turns a deep amber color (about 15-20 minutes).

  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

  4. Pour mixture onto a lined baking sheet and spread it out evenly with a spatula.

  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the toffee and let them sit for a few minutes until melted.

  6. Use a spatula to spread melted chocolate evenly across the toffee.

  7. Sprinkle chopped nuts (if using) over the chocolate.

  8. Let the toffee cool completely, then break into pieces and serve.
