Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.

  2. Add the cold diced butter and use your hands or a pastry cutter to cut it into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until it comes together.

  4. Form the dough into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  5. After chilling, remove the dough from the fridge and divide it into smaller portions, depending on the desired size of your empanadas.

  6. Roll out each portion of dough into a thin circle, about 1/8 inch thick.

  7. Fill each empanada with your desired filling, then fold the dough over and press the edges together to seal.

  8. Use a fork to crimp the edges and create a decorative pattern.

  9. Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  10. Brush the tops of the empanadas with the beaten egg wash.

  11. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

  12. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
