  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined and a dough forms.

  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.

  6. Pat the dough into a 3/4-inch thick circle. Use a round cutter to cut out scones and transfer them onto the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Brush the tops of the scones with melted butter.

  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  9. Serve warm with jam, butter, or clotted cream.
