Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon melted butter, for brushing
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
-
Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined and a dough forms.
-
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
-
Pat the dough into a 3/4-inch thick circle. Use a round cutter to cut out scones and transfer them onto the prepared baking sheet.
-
Brush the tops of the scones with melted butter.
-
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
-
Serve warm with jam, butter, or clotted cream.
