How To Make Arepas de Queso

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 35 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups masarepa (precooked cornmeal)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup grated cheese (queso blanco or mozzarella)
  • Butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine masarepa and salt. Gradually add warm water and mix until a dough forms.

  2. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 5 minutes.

  3. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten to form a patty about ½ inch thick.

  4. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of grated cheese onto the center of 4 patties. Top with the remaining 4 patties and press the edges to seal.

  5. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add butter or oil. Cook the arepas for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

  6. Transfer the arepas to a baking sheet and finish cooking in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10 minutes.

  7. Serve warm with your favorite toppings or fillings.
