Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup low-fat buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp red food coloring
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In another bowl, whisk together applesauce, oil, buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.

  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

  5. Spray an 8×8 inch baking pan with cooking spray.

  6. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. Let it cool before serving.
