How To Make Apple Pie Bars

These yummy bars are made from fresh apples and topped off with a zesty lemon glaze that's perfect for a Thanksgiving-themed dessert.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 10 tbsp cold water


  • 7 cups apples, finely chopped , peeled
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • dash ground nutmeg


  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice


  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks, lemon juice and water; gradually add to flour mixture, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.
  4. Divide in half.
  5. Chill for 30 minutes. Roll out one portion of dough between two large sheets of waxed paper into a 17-inch x 12-inch rectangle.

  6. Transfer to an ungreased 15-inch x 10-inch x 1-inch baking pan.

  7. Press pastry onto the bottom and up the sides of pan; trim pastry even with top edge. In a bowl, toss the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; spread over crust.
  8. Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pan; place over filling.
  9. Trim edges; brush edges between pastry with water or milk; pinch to seal.
  10. Cut slits in top.
  11. Bake at 375 degrees F for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

  12. Cool on a wire rack.
  13. Combine glaze ingredients until smooth; drizzle over bars before cutting.
