Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
-
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg.
-
In a separate small bowl, warm the milk to about 110°F and stir in the yeast.
-
Add the melted butter and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients, followed by the milk-yeast mixture.
-
Stir until a soft dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
-
Use a doughnut cutter or a round cookie cutter to cut out doughnuts and transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
Cover the doughnuts with a damp towel and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
-
Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F.
-
Carefully lower the doughnuts into the hot oil, cooking a few at a time for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
-
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked doughnuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
-
Dust the warm doughnuts with powdered sugar and serve immediately.
