Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 10 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg.

  2. In a separate small bowl, warm the milk to about 110°F and stir in the yeast.

  3. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients, followed by the milk-yeast mixture.

  4. Stir until a soft dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  6. Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.

  7. Use a doughnut cutter or a round cookie cutter to cut out doughnuts and transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. Cover the doughnuts with a damp towel and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.

  9. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F.

  10. Carefully lower the doughnuts into the hot oil, cooking a few at a time for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.

  11. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked doughnuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  12. Dust the warm doughnuts with powdered sugar and serve immediately.
