Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.

  2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, heat the milk until warm (about 110°F or 43°C).

  3. Pour the warm milk, melted butter, and egg into the flour mixture. Stir until well combined and a dough forms.

  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out to about ½-inch thickness.

  7. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out doughnut shapes. Then use a smaller cutter or a bottle cap to cut out the centers, creating the doughnut shape.

  8. Place the doughnuts and doughnut holes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  9. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 365°F (185°C).

  10. Carefully drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, in batches, and fry for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.

  11. Remove the doughnuts from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  12. Dust the warm doughnuts with powdered sugar and serve immediately.
