  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • For the icing:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: chopped pecans for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.

  5. Meanwhile, prepare the icing. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the milk and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.

  6. Pour the warm icing over the cooled cake, spreading it evenly. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans on top for garnish. Allow the icing to set before serving.
