How To Make Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake

Ingredients
- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 and 1/2 cups whipped cream
- Chocolate shavings, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

Gradually add flour mixture to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Pour batter into prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled, slice it horizontally into two layers.

Place the bottom layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake, then top with sliced strawberries. Place the second layer of cake on top.

Frost the entire cake with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings and additional strawberries, if desired.
