How To Make Malaysian Otak-Otak Recipe

A spicy and flavorful fish cake wrapped in banana leaves, popular in Malaysian cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 500g white fish fillet, deboned and chopped
  • 1 tbsp of shrimp paste
  • 2 tbsp of red chili paste
  • 2 tbsp of tamarind pulp
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 4 kaffir lime leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 200ml of coconut milk
  • Banana leaves, cut into 8-inch squares

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine fish, shrimp paste, chili paste, tamarind pulp, sugar, salt, kaffir lime leaves, and egg. Mix well.

  2. Slowly add coconut milk to the mixture while stirring.

  3. Prepare the banana leaf squares by boiling them in hot water until they are soft.

  4. Take a scoop of the fish mixture and wrap it in the banana leaf square. Secure both ends with toothpicks.

  5. Steam the wrapped fish cakes for 20-30 minutes until cooked.

  6. Serve hot with chili dipping sauce.
