Sourdough Pretzels Recipe

How To Make Sourdough Pretzels

Soft, chewy and slightly tangy pretzels made with sourdough starter.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 12 minutes
Total: 32 minutes (excluding fermenting time)

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Coarse salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sourdough starter, salt, flour, brown sugar and warm water. Mix well until the dough forms.

  2. Knead the dough for 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth.

  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for 6-8 hours until doubled in size.

  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F.

  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into 18-inch long ropes.

  6. Make a U-shape with the rope and fold the ends downward, pressing them into the bottom curve of the U to form a pretzel shape.

  7. In a shallow dish, dissolve baking soda into 3 cups of warm water. Dip each pretzel into the water mixture and then place them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. Mix the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water and brush the mixture onto each pretzel.

  9. Sprinkle coarse salt onto each pretzel and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

  10. Serve warm and enjoy!
