Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 patties.

  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your desired level of doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  3. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized and golden brown, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

  4. Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.

  5. Place a patty on the mayonnaise side of 4 bread slices. Top with caramelized onions and 2 slices of Swiss cheese. Cover with remaining bread slices, mayo side down.

  6. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the remaining butter. Place the sandwiches on the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted.

  7. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

  8. Cut the sandwiches diagonally and serve hot.
