How To Make Classic Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot over medium heat and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up into crumbles with a spoon.

  2. Add onion, garlic, carrot, and celery to the pot. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine (if using), dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  4. Cook spaghetti according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

  5. Serve the Bolognese sauce over cooked spaghetti. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
