Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up into crumbles.

  2. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery to the pot. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.

  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, beef broth, oregano, basil, thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  4. In the meantime, cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  5. Serve the bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Top with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
