How To Make Irish Barmbrack

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mixed dried fruits (such as raisins, currants, and chopped dates)
  • 1 cup hot black tea
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the dried fruits and hot black tea. Let it soak for 1 hour.

  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a loaf pan with parchment paper.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and orange zest.

  4. Stir in the soaked dried fruits, along with any remaining tea.

  5. Add the beaten egg, melted butter, and honey to the mixture and stir until well combined.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

  7. Bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  8. Allow the barmbrack to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  9. Slice and serve with butter or enjoy on its own.
