How To Make Soft Pretzels

Homemade soft pretzels that are perfect for snacking or a party.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Sea salt, for topping
  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine water, yeast, sugar, and salt.

  2. Let sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.

  3. Add flour and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope.

  5. Twist each rope into a pretzel shape.

  6. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.

  7. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet.

  8. Brush each pretzel with the egg yolk and sprinkle with sea salt.

  9. Bake at 450°F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

  10. Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce.
