Ingredients

  • 1 cup split green gram lentils (moong dal)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup cream
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the moong dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker or a pot. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  4. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.

  5. Add the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates from the masala.

  6. Add the soaked moong dal, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well.

  7. Add enough water to cover the dal and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles, or cook in a pot until the dal is soft and cooked.

  8. Once cooked, mash the dal slightly with the back of a spoon.

  9. Stir in the cream and simmer for 5-10 minutes.

  10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

  11. Serve hot with rice or roti.
