How To Make Canadian Butter Tarts

A classic Canadian dessert with a rich, gooey filling and flaky pastry crust.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Total: 35 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup of cold water
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of raisins or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour and chilled butter. Use a pastry cutter or your hands to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. Slowly add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form into a ball and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30 minutes.

  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out circles to fit a muffin tin.

  4. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar, maple syrup, melted butter, beaten egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  5. Place a spoonful of the filling into each pastry circle. Add raisins or pecans, if desired.

  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until the filling is set and the pastry is golden brown.

  7. Allow to cool before serving. Enjoy!
