How To Make Beignets

Beignets are delicious, deep-fried pastries that are soft, pillowy, and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 40 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.

  2. In a separate bowl, mix together milk, water, melted butter, and vanilla extract.

  3. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).

  5. Using a spoon or ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying in batches.

  6. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  7. Remove beignets from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  8. Dust the warm beignets generously with powdered sugar before serving.
