Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 8 hours
Total: 8 hours 10 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1/4 cup of plain yogurt (as a starter culture)

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 180°F (82°C). Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.

  2. Once the milk reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool to 110°F (43°C).

  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the plain yogurt and a small amount of the warm milk until well combined.

  4. Pour the yogurt mixture into the saucepan with the remaining warm milk and stir until thoroughly mixed.

  5. Transfer the milk and yogurt mixture to a clean glass container or individual serving jars.

  6. Cover the container(s) with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and place in a warm location, such as an oven with the light turned on, for 6 to 8 hours or overnight. This allows the yogurt to ferment and thicken.

  7. Once the yogurt has set, refrigerate it for at least 2 hours before serving. This will help to further thicken the yogurt and enhance the flavor.

  8. Serve the homemade yogurt plain or with your favorite toppings, such as fresh fruit, honey, or granola.
