How To Make Reduced Sugar Date Bars

Ingredients
For Crust and topping:
- 1 cup shortening
- ½ tsp salt
- 3 cup oats, uncooked
- 2 ½ cup flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
For Filling:
- 16 oz dates, chopped
- 1 cup boiling water
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together shortening, salt, oats, flour and brown sugar in a large bowl

Save 1/3 of the mixture for the topping and press remaining mixture into bottom of lightly greased 9 x 13 pan.

Cook dates and water until thick (if too thick, add a little more water). Cool.

Spread on top of crust. Sprinkle with remaining 1/3 reserved oat mixture on top.

Bake 20 to 30 minutes (they are more chewy at 30 minutes).
