How To Make Reduced Sugar Date Bars

Ingredients

For Crust and topping:

  • 1 cup shortening
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 cup oats, uncooked
  • 2 ½ cup flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar

For Filling:

  • 16 oz dates, chopped
  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Mix together shortening, salt, oats, flour and brown sugar in a large bowl

  3. Save 1/3 of the mixture for the topping and press remaining mixture into bottom of lightly greased 9 x 13 pan.

  4. Cook dates and water until thick (if too thick, add a little more water). Cool.

  5. Spread on top of crust. Sprinkle with remaining 1/3 reserved oat mixture on top.

  6. Bake 20 to 30 minutes (they are more chewy at 30 minutes).
