Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • For the filling:
  • 1 lb ground beef or chicken
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Indian taco seasoning (or substitute with a mix of cumin, coriander, chili powder, and paprika)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Toppings of your choice: shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, etc.

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm water while stirring until a sticky dough forms.

  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place it back in the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a skillet, cook the ground beef or chicken until browned. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the Indian taco seasoning, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

  4. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a circle or oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.

  5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Fry each dough portion one at a time until golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  6. To assemble the Indian tacos, place a fry bread on a plate and spoon the filling onto the center. Add your desired toppings.

  7. Serve the Indian tacos hot and enjoy!
