Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 1 hour 5 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 lb beef, diced
  • 1/2 lb potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup rutabaga, peeled and diced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and butter. Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.

  2. Gradually add water and knead the dough until it forms a smooth ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  4. In a separate bowl, mix together beef, potatoes, onion, rutabaga, salt, and black pepper.

  5. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into four equal-sized circles.

  6. Place a portion of the filling onto half of each circle, leaving a border around the edges. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.

  7. Transfer the pasties to a lined baking sheet. Brush the pasties with beaten egg.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is cooked through.
