Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.

  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).

  5. Drop spoonfuls of the doughnut batter into the hot oil, frying for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.

  6. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on paper towels.

  7. Optional: dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar or glaze with your favorite icing before serving.
